Established in 1796, Bullitt County is named after Kentucky’s first Lieutenant Governor, Alexander Scott Bullitt. Alexander Scott Bullitt was the nephew of Capt. Thomas Bullitt who discovered Bullitt’s Lick on a surveying expedition in 1773. Early pioneers had settled the area years before the founding of Bullitt’s Lick due to the paths cut by herds of buffalo, deer and elk migrating to the natural salt licks, but it wasn’t until Capt. Thomas Bullitt that the area became one of the largest salt making operations in the region. Salt was critical to survival of pioneers and Native Americans alike, thus salt licks such as Bullitt’s Lick were often the scene of battles among settlers and the area’s indigenous people. The site of Kentucky’s first commercial industry, Bullitt’s Lick primarily served the Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee territories, however salt produced at Bullitt’s Lick was also sent down the Salt, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans on flatboats. Shepherdsville developed near the licks and became the county seat, and The Wilderness Trail, which led to Bullitt’s and other nearby salt licks from the Cumberland Gap, became the first inland intermodal distribution system for commerce in the western frontier. Another pioneer industry in Bullitt County was Iron production. Bullitt County was one of the largest producers of iron in Kentucky during the 18th and 19th centuries, and it is said that the first railroad rails west of the Alleghenies were made in Bullitt County. After a century of expansion, Bullitt County’s salt and iron industries had faded, and so had its forests due to the vast quantities of timber cut to fire the kettles which boiled water into salt, and the furnaces which melted ore into iron. In 1929 a successful businessman and naturalist, Isaac W. Bernheim established the Bernheim Foundation and purchased 16,000 plus acres in southeast Bullitt County to be returned to natural forest. Today Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is internationally renowned for its work with native-habitat rehabilitation and its unmatched collections of native-species plants and trees. Less than a mile from what would become Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, a giant in Kentucky’s signature Bourbon industry would emerge near the end of the 18th century under the Beam family. In 1795 Jacob Beam sold his first barrel of whiskey. Called, “Old Jake Beam Sour Mash,” this whiskey was particularly popular among pioneers, farmers and traders. The family distillery was then known as “Old Tub.” From Old Tub to James B. Beam Distilling Co., the historic distillery has become one of the largest producers of Bourbon in the world.
Bullitt County consists of roughly 300 square-miles located in the area known as the Knobs Region, which borders Kentucky’s outer Bluegrass Region. This area is noted for its many isolated, steep sloping, often cone-shaped hills of shale, limestone and sandstone. Dividing Bullitt County from east to west is the Salt River. Many small creeks and other tributaries flow into the Salt River, which stretches 150 miles from central Kentucky to the Ohio River. The U.S. Army Post Fort Knox encompasses much of Bullitt County’s western half and approximately one-fifth of Bullitt County as a whole, while Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, Kentucky’s official state arboretum, encompasses a significant portion of southeast Bullitt County.
Bullitt County has a population of 78,702, making it the 10th most populous county in Kentucky according to 2015 U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The estimated population of the Louisville-Jefferson County Metropolitan Statistical Area, of which Bullitt County is a part, is 1,269,702.
